Buying in the Country
04:48
|
|||
we walked into the house
through a gaping hole in the back
(construction from the addition)
in the kitchen, with the frying pan hanging there
I pictured you in that dress, and wildflowers in your hair
you're as pretty as a flower
and that gives me power
oh, yeah. buying in the country was a good idea
when I snapped back, time pushed me like a river
we gardened all summer
and watched the flowers wither
in fall. then, in winter, put a tarp on the hole
(some work never gets finished)

New Roman Gods
03:29
|
|||
I had a dream I was beautiful
woke up and I was not
walked a mile to the temple
to see the new gods
had a vision on the floor
I was foaming at the mouth
gold rings around the faces
looking down at me
when I came home you were sleeping
still lying in the bed
I wish I could open
the locker in your head
sometimes, it feels like you leave me on the shelf
but I know you, baby
you love me better than anyone else
on the days when you're absent
I walk the water's edge
think things that scare me
and throw them back again
I'm still living in the past
I just keep showing up there
a hunchback caving
a little every year
but sometimes love is a trick
you gotta pull on yourself
I know you, baby
you love me better than anyone else
last night I had that dream again
all my features were Roman...
sometimes love is a trick
you gotta pull on yourself
I know you, baby
you love me better than anyone else

The Valley
02:28
|
|||
in the pretty valley, there are no complaints
critters fly without grace
the nights are black and full of dreams
the days run like streams
I kissed you on the backroads near the excavator
it felt so good
beer cans in the gravel, butts in the weeds
stars bright and sparkly
when I get home and watch you pull away
feels like I'm being jerked awake
I can't go back
don't know what to do
I feel crazy when your love cuts through

Snow in July
04:14
|
|||
snow in July
I wasn't prepared
the joggers and birds
are all running scared
the town where we lived
is covered in white
the lake we swam in
is closed up tight
the grocery stores
sold out of the food I like
meanwhile, in heaven
the Sun is alive
the pastures of plenty
go on for miles
they're fucking on beaches
drinking champagne
the angels are partying
up there with the planes
so if I freeze
wake me up on the beach
